80% organic and 100% less bull than other natural brands

When we decided to start this line, we thought long and hard about whether the world really needs another natural skin care company. There are a gazillion beauty brands out there, and more and more pop up every day.  But instead of being happy about all the new choices, people are more confused than ever about what to use. Why then, did we decide to add to this over crowded and seldom trusted industry?

Besides being beauty junkies constantly trying every new product ourselves, we also spent a year researching every brand that came on the market over the last 5 years, studied older brands that have been around for decades and compared every single ingredient list. We wanted to know if our ideas were already out there, because if they were, then we could happily buy those products rather than add to the natural skin care craze. We did not find our ideas on the market. This is what we found instead:

Most of the more recent natural brands have founders that all have the same story, which is that they started their business because they couldn’t find a natural product off the shelf so they decided to make it themself. However, there are tons of clean products already and there have been for decades, and with lots of boutiques dedicated to selling them, it’s pretty hard not to bump into natural products these days. The second reason is because most, if not all of these founders admit to having no experience in skin care, biochemistry, cosmetic chemistry or any credibility but they wanted certain ingredients that they could not find. It doesn’t mean they are knowledgeable about those ingredients. These founders do not formulate products, but instead buy products from natural skin care manufacturers and put their own label on it. This does not make them experts on their own products (or any skincare) since they didn’t actually develop them.

Then there are the essential oils. It seems natural is synonymous with essential oils these days. It is very difficult to find a natural brand that doesn’t have several essential oils in their products. We do not believe in essential oils for your face. That huge topic will be covered in other posts, but for now, everyone is switching to natural brands because they feel it is safer, yet if there are essential oils in them, they are not necessarily safer. The chemicals in essential oils may be naturally occurring chemicals, but they can still cause chemical burns and low level inflammation on your skin. We avoid them like the plague in our search for face products. However, we cannot find a whole lot of natural products made without essential oils.

Another reason we think so many natural brands are full of crap is because of the fear mongering.  As someone who understands chemistry, it is upsetting that all the small brands resort to telling everyone their products are safer and cleaner than all the big brands. They don’t have a big marketing budget so the only way to compete is to instill fear. We are completely against fear based marketing. It’s both unnecessary and untrue. We happen to like wild, exotic ingredients from around the world, so we choose to be natural, but that is not because we fear everything else. It’s just a lifestyle choice that works for us.  And we want you to buy products because you love them, not because you are afraid of the alternatives.

So we thought there was a great need for products with unadulterated ingredients, proven to work well on skin, with no essential oils, based on ocean ingredients (to cut down on farmland/water use), and placed in glass containers (to cut down on plastics). We also thought there was a need for a lot less bull from natural skin care companies. We really hope you like what we’ve made.
