DIY vitamin C serum
Here is a DIY vitamin C serum for fun. As long as you use it up fairly quickly, like within a month, the ascorbic acid should not oxidize. The ferulic acid is there to slow the oxidation of ascorbic acid. (If you have sensitive skin, do not use this serum. Ascorbic acid will make your skin hyper-sensitive. You’ll need to use a different form of vitamin C and an altogether different recipe which we'll put in a future post.
15% vitamin C
Approximate measurements are good enough. Use level teaspoons.
1 tsp (5 g) ascorbic acid
1 tsp Oceanica Caviar Oil ( or any favorite oil)
3 tsp (15 gm) distilled water
1/8 tsp ferulic acid
1/8 tsp phloretin
1/4 tsp vodka
1/2 tsp Hyaluronic acid (or Sodium Hyaluronate if vegan)
Use 2 small glasses.
Glass with phase 1 (water)
Put ascorbic acid in glass, add water, stir frequently and let it fully dissolve. If not completely dissolved after 10 min, add a hint more of water.
Glass with phase 2 (alcohol and oil)
While you are waiting for the ascorbic acid to dissolve, you can proceed with the rest. Put the ferulic acid and phloretin in the 2nd glass, pour the vodka in and stir. Add the oil and stir.
When the ascorbic acid has fully dissolved, mix the contents of both glasses together and stir well. Finally, add the hyaluronic acid to thicken the mix.
Shake before every use since there is no emulsifier. Put in a serum bottle and store in medicine cabinet away from sunlight. Discard if color turns brown or any color other than the color you see today when fresh. This will indicate that ascorbic acid has oxidized and will be very aging on your skin.
We use magnesium ascorbyl sorbate form of Vitamin C in our products because it is more stable (meaning won’t oxidize quickly), fat soluble (meaning you can use it in creams or oils), and is less irritating than ascorbic acid. However there is a bit more to it than just mixing, and not easiliy available to the consumer, so if you are a DIY gal, this should work fine, but you must use it up fairly quickly. Remember if the color turns, throw it away!
Have fun! And if you are too lazy to do this, you're in good company. Click here to find out when our serum is finished. You cannot buy it on our website, only by getting on our list. (But there is never an obligation to buy even if you are on the list!)
