Spa spotlight: Miami
The Spa by Themae is a luxury spa in the Setai Resort in Miami Beach. As you may guess from the name, it has Far Eastern inspired aesthetics and the guest suites are amazing Ocean suites or Art Deco suites. The hotel’s food is an incredible blend of modern southeast Asian cuisine. I love the decor, it reminds me of some of the exotic resorts in Thailand like the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok right on Chao Phraya River with its stone Buddhas, teak woods and tropical flowers.
I chose a Bali Oriental Ritual because I wanted to compare it to the Balinese spa experience I had at The Four Seasons Resort in Bali. The balinese massage is similar to Thai massage in that it uses deep tissue pressure point massage and long strokes to remove lymph. They are also big on foot reflexology which was hugely satisfying for me but I’ll save that for another article. This beautiful resort in Miami replicated the Balinese ritual to a T including the foot reflexology! It was like I was transported to the carefree days of my youth traipsing through the rice terraces of Indonesia stumbling upon old temples full of Indonesian art.
The products they use at the spa are a great brand from Paris using green tea, red tea, white tea and black tea. While the tea products both on your face and in your tea pot are wonderful, I felt they could have gone all the way to ancient Siam by using an Asian brand rather than a French brand. While still a lovely experience it was the only thing that didn’t fit in with the rest of the vibe.
I want to go back one day but alas, so many spas.. so little time!
