The truth about Vitamin A
Vitamins are organic compounds that are essential to human metabolism, that must be acquired through food. One of the very important skin vitamins is vitamin A which helps maintain skin’s integrity. Vitamin A appears to switch on certain genes and differentiate keratinocytes into mature epidermal cells.
The benefits of topical tretinoin on sun damaged skin were first observed in middle-aged women being treated for acne. These women described smoother, less wrinkled skin in addition to the clearing of acne. Improvements were noted in skin texture, wrinkling, pigmentation, and sallowness. Although these effects were first studied using tretinoin, retinyl acetate (vitamin A) has similar effects BUT without the irritation caused by tretinoin and without the need for medical supervision.
The vitamin A found in animal sources, called retinyl ester, is fat soluble. This is also the form of vitamin A we used in natural products, and what is used in daily vitamins. Retinol and retinal are very unstable, and not allowed in the natural skin care industry of which we are a part.
Many people can’t use topical tretinoin because of its side effects, which include skin irritation. We know that this is not a problem with retinyl esters, like retinyl acetate, because they work just as well or better, they don’t have side effects and don’t require medical supervision. The take home lesson is that it is simply not worthwhile to suffer the side effects of tretinoin and other synthetic forms of vitamin A. Look for products with the retinyl acetate form and you’ll reap all the benefits for your skin without any bad side effects.
Although retinyl is allowable in the natural industry, we took natural further by using Sea Fennel for our vitamin A derivative. It works as well as retinol or retinyl, and is a completely natural version. This gorgeous little known sea plant (see pic above) has vitamins A, C, and E, giving it antioxidant, conditioning, and soothing properties all in one. People report benefits such as including unclogging pores, boosting collagen, reducing fine lines, and speeding up cell turnover. All these benefits and more are found in our Brightening Cream which gently illuminates your skin, turning over and revealing new, younger cells. We hope you like it so please let us know.
