What to do about sun damage

The incidence of sun-induced skin damage is increasing at an alarming rate.  Sun exposure is currently responsible for more than 90% of all skin cancers.  Thankfully, no one has ever gotten skin cancer from a beauty product. Promoting healthy skin that can protect and repair itself as well as using proper protection against the sun and avoiding sun exposure when possible is absolutely necessary to reducing the effects of long-term sun damage to the skin.

Sun damage occurs as a result of the skin’s exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays.  As UV rays are absorbed, they can cause cells to enter into photo-excited states, which can lead to the formation of free radicals, oxidation and cellular damage to occur.  If skin is continually exposed, over time it struggles to repair and rebuild itself and we see the results on the surface of our skin.

Eventually, changes on the surface shows up as hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, fine lines and other more serious marks like precancerous lesions.

We already have built in mechanisms to repair sun damage. Niacin is one of the components that help the process.  Niacin stimulates renewal and dermal functions which result in healthier skin.  Ceramides (the waxy coating of cells found in baby skin) are needed to rebuild plump cell walls. There are things you can do to help to keep your skin safe:

PREVENT- Sun Protection Factors (SPF) reflect the sun’s harmful UVA/UVB rays. As a result, DNA damage is minimized and the risk of developing sun damaged skin is reduced.

PROTECT- Building a strong, healthy skin barrier goes a long way to help the skin protect itself from future damage. A stronger, healthier skin barrier is able to reduce the number of UV rays entering the basal layer.

REPAIR-  Repair the generation process of healthier skin cells to help reduce the signs of sun damage by utilizing niacinamide and ceramides.

You can get all the UV reparative nutrients alongside emollients straight from the tropical Caribbean Sun in our UV Repair Cream. It has niacinamide, ceramides, anti-oxidants, melatonin, red algae and ocean minerals whipped to perfection in a base of mango butter and rosehip oil. Everything that thrives in the tropics is included to help your skin thrive whether or not you’re close to the equator.
